37th Annual Greater Victoria Flower Count
February 25th, 2013
Dates: February 26, 2013 to March 4, 2013
Location: Victoria, BC
The Flower Count is an annual light-hearted promotion sponsored and organized the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, The Butchart Gardens and Tourism Victoria. The goal is to bolster community pride and increase awareness of Greater Victoria as an attractive shoulder-season tourism destination. It brings national and international attention to the fact that Victoria (City of Gardens) has the mildest climate in Canada. While the rest of Canada and much of the US is still in the cold clutches of winter weather, Victoria often enjoys spring temperatures of 10-15° Celsius (up to 60° Fahrenheit).
Each municipality across Greater Victoria is encouraged to take up the challenge to be the “Bloomingest Community” of the Greater Victoria area! People reporting flower counts will have their number attributed to their community. Whether they live on the Saanich Peninsula or in Sooke, every flower counts, for their own community and for the overall total.
For one week in early spring the citizens of Greater Victoria count all the blossoms they can find. The results are then reported to Flower Count Headquarters via the internet at www.flowercount.ca. As the numbers come in, announcements are sent to local media to inform everyone of the growing count. For 36 years, fresh cut daffodils have been sent to media across North America to announce the kick off of Victoria’s annual Flower Count, with the final tally proudly announced to all at the end of Flower Count week.
How to count
- Small tree full of blossoms = 250,000 blossoms
- Medium tree full of blossoms = 500,000 blossoms
- Large tree full of blossoms = 750,000 blossoms
- Small Heather bush = 500 blossoms
- Medium Heather bush = 1,000 blossoms
- Large Heather bush = 2,000 blossoms
How Many Blooms are Counted?
In 1976, over 130 million blooms were counted. By 1996, with a growing population and more community participation, that figure rose to over 4 billion (4,220,401,563 blooms). 2002 broke new records with an amazing 8.5 billion blooms, but so far 2010 is our reigning best bloomin’ year with 21 billion flowers counted!

Celebrating 155 years of Victoria’s Chinatown
In conjunction with the Victoria Symphony, this temporary exhibition showcases Victoria Chinatown’s important role in history.
On display is a Chinese Freemason’s lantern, dated between the 1910s and the 1930s, in the process of conservation work. The lantern reveals early-twentieth-century Chinese Canadian’s transnational links and sophisticated Chinese Cultural upbringings.
Video recordings of the elders recount life in Victoria Chinatown during the 1930s to 1950s and how Chinese New Year was celebrated back then. Videos include clips from Dr David Lai, Canada’s Mr. Chinatown, and four families who had businesses and lived in Chinatown.

January 22nd, 2013
“LEAD WITH YOUR HEART TOUR”
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH, 2013
SAVE-ON-FOODS MEMORIAL CENTRE – VICTORIA, BC
Since their inception only five years ago as the Canadian Tenors, they have been thrilling audiences around the world with their powerful voices and memorable melodies. Their blend of classical music and contemporary pop has garnered them international success. The music of Port McNeill’s Clifton Murray, Toronto’s Victor Micallef, Quebec’s Remigio Pereira, and Vancouver’s Fraser Walters is rich and soulful with powerful anthems and beautiful melodies. Both their debut and holiday albums have gone platinum in Canada and have been released in territories around the world.
The Tenors are poised to release their second studio album, Lead With Your Heart on October 30. It is their first album in over two years, following the international release of their debut album and an extensive touring schedule. Lead With Your Heart is a 12-track album that stretches the boundaries of classical crossover by combining classic songs, modern tunes and Spanish and French world music. From cover features such as Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” and Elton John’s “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word” to the inspirational anthem “Amazing Grace”, and one of the most recognizable and heroic Tenor arias, “Nessun Dorma”, the diverse track list features a mix of pop favourites and classical staples along with new compositions written and co-written by The Tenors.
Over the past two years, The Tenors have performed worldwide and shared the stage with legendary artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion (on the Oprah show) Sting, and Paul McCartney, to name a few. More recently, The Tenors were featured performers on two primetime international broadcasts: The Emmy Awards live from Los Angeles and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations from Windsor Castle in the UK, where The Tenors performed for Her Majesty.
