Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest Chinatown in Canada and second oldest in North America, coming right behind San Francisco! With its own distinctive decorations and style, it makes it a unique part of the downtown core.

In the depths of Chinatown is a Chinese school, historical buildings, and Fan Tan Alley. Fan Tan Alley was originally a private walkway; however, it is now home to little shops and offices. Find local Chinese restaurants and markets amongst the street as well!

Absorb the Chinese-Canadian culture, take in the beautiful stoned lions that guard the gate to Chinatown, called the Gate of Harmonious Interest, and visit the famous alleyway!

Did you know?

Throughout the 1850s – 1860s, Chinatown was a major gateway for Asian immigrants. In 1911, Chinatown reached its peak size, covering six blocks of downtown Victoria with housing. It housed over 3,500 people, more than all of downtown’s population today!
